There are few things in life more rewarding than growing your own food. Even if you don’t have a large backyard or spacious balcony that allows you to grow vegetables, you can still set up a small herb garden in your home! Adding herbs to your kitchen can promote healthier cooking, will add diversity to your dishes and spruce up your interior.
To set up an indoor herb garden in your kitchen or living space, all you need is:
-
Pots or planters (with saucers or trays)
-
Potting mix and small pebbles
-
Seeds or pre-grown herbs
Visit your local nursery to buy baby herbs or fresh seeds and make sure to buy potting mix and not garden soil as it’s too heavy for your potted herbs. Ideally, two parts of organic potting soil and one part of perlite will make for a light and nutrient-rich potting mix that’ll help your herbs grow. Adding small pebbles to the bottom of the pot before filling it with potting mix and planting your herbs can further help with airflow and keep the roots of your plants healthy.
Placing your pots or planters on saucers or trays will keep your kitchen nice and clean. They will catch all excess water or dirt coming out of the drainage holes at the bottom of your pots so it can’t ruin your kitchen counters.
If you’re worried your kitchen may be too dark for anything to grow, invest in a fluorescent light. It can make up for low natural sunlight and will allow you to grow herbs even in the smallest, darkest indoor space.
Some of the easiest herbs to grow indoors are thyme, parsley, peppermint, chives and cilantro as they grow well in partial or indirect sunlight. In a kitchen with large windows, you should have no problem growing rosemary or a basil plant.
